Redbud Seedlings
Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) seedlings are available: 5 for $15, 10 for $25, 25 for $50. They are 18"-24" tall. This tree typically grows to 20-30 feet high with a 26-33 feet spread. It has a short, often twisted trunk and wide branches. A 10-year-old tree is about 16 feet tall. The bark is dark, smooth, becoming scaly with time and may have maroon patches. The twigs are thin, twisted, almost black, with lighter spots. Tiny, rounded winter buds are dark red to chestnut. The heart-shaped leaves are 3-4.5 inches long, thin, sometimes hairy underneath. The showy flowers, ½ inch long, range from light to dark magenta pink and bloom in clusters from spring to early summer, often before the leaves. Some types have white flowers. These flowers are pollinated by long-tongued bees, as short-tongued bees cannot reach the nectar. The fruit is a flat, dry pod, 2-4 inches long, containing brown seeds, maturing from August to October.
